2009 - NMO & the Puget Sound Volunteer Program
The New Member Orienation (NMO)is being developed by Gordon Storey and is nearing publication. With guidance from Board Members, Gordon has almost single-handedly produced a solid first module and the next step is to get feedback and ultimately board approval to publish the latest version in January.
I compare this project to the many iterations of corporate orientations I have been lucky to develop. I have learned the value of collaborating with every "Department" head to determine content--both the "what"(content) and the "when" (optimum timing).
Gordon and I feel we have a solid initial product...sort of the classic "nuts and bolts" orientation. However, we see a need to establish a central message (or culture) we want the Orientation to reflect.
We need to have a clear vision of what our "culture" is and be sure that our message/delivery reflects that culture. We haven't done this work yet as a board, and it will take some time, but the effort will pay-off in terms of raising our profile, professionalism and ultimately sustaining membership/volunteers.
Gordon's design includes future modules to help onboard volunteers. He has some excellent ideas that align with my vision for our volunteer program of 2009 which I have also been busy with in December. That vision includes working closely with volunteers to learn their strengths and development goals. With this insight, we can place individuals in roles that help them meet their goals. I am planning on collaborating with a team to support this drive to make our volunteer program even more rewarding.
We have over 65 members who are actively volunteering or have let us know they are interested. Harnessing their talents will be a very powerful force for ASTD Puget Sound.
