Membership has its privileges.
Sometimes I reflect back on my days early in the workplace learning field and remember not knowing exactly where to go for help, who my mentors might be, and where resources might be found. I was introduced to ASTD via a director back in the days when we were still called "Training and Development." I remember going to the first local chapter meeting and being really impressed by the quality of people that knew this industry. I soon learned through its ASTD and many members at the local chapter there's much more to learning development than meets the eye. It was fun "growing up" in that chapter, and being part of a couple of other chapters since has not changed my mind that it was the right direction for my career.
As I look at our local chapter in the Puget Sound area, I'm again impressed by the amount of resources, knowledge and networking that goes on here. One of my daily rituals is to go to the ASTD Puget Sound website, www.astdps.org, and look at what's new. Often times I see Twitter posts from other board members or members and I see upcoming events and can plan accordingly, as well as many other resources we provide online. I discover a lot of information just through our own newsletter that's distributed every month.
For me, it is the members themselves that really make this chapter stand out. Going back almost 20 years when I first started in the training and development industry, I remember those people that helped me direct my path and help me grow as a professional. I see the same type of people in our own membership. I wish I had the time to attend every chapter meeting, special events and other programs that we offer here in the Puget Sound. I've met people from the banking industry, healthcare, high-tech industry, and others. There's so much expertise and so many resources for us in our own backyard.
You are the ones that make the difference and you are the people that help others. You are our resources, our networking partners and our eyes on the ground in learning. I hope you take some time to reflect on your own history in the workplace learning field and hope that ASTD and our members are part of your development.

ICE At a Glance: An Overview of the 2012 ASTD International Conference and Exposition
Not able to attend the ASTD International Conference and Exposition? We will make the most of it by hosting a panel discussion with some of our chapter members who attended! Join Craig Branham, Cynthia Clay, Rick Shor, and Karen Thornton for the conversation and hear what is being talked about by other workplace learning professionals. We will delve into mobile learning, social learning, innovation, and the role of the learner. The discussion will also include what was heard at ICE that may be counter to popular logic and trends.

Lisa Downs has played an integral role in both our local chapter and the national ASTD organization for over six years. Beginning in 2006, Lisa served for four years on the ASTD Puget Sound Chapter Board – as VP of Membership, as President, and as Past President. She moved on to work in a leadership role for the national organization when she joined the ASTD National Advisors for Chapters (NAC), first as the Chair of the ASTD Chapter Recognition Committee (CRC), and now as a regular member. Her three-year term with NAC, which is a group of 12 past chapter Presidents, expires at the end of 2013. In this role, Lisa serves as a peer mentor/advisor to ASTD chapters in Alaska, Washington (including Puget Sound), Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota. The NAC members serve as a liaison between local chapters and national ASTD, helping to connect chapter leaders with national resources and with other chapter leaders throughout the country. To top off her involvement with ASTD, Lisa has also authored three books in the ASTD Trainers Workshop Series (Listening Skills Training, Time Management Training, and Negotiation Skills Training). She has just completed a series of four blog posts on leadership development for ASTD’s new Human Capital Community of Practice and will also have an article on integrated talent management in the August issue of T+D magazine.
In addition to the amazing work Lisa does for ASTD, she also manages to hold down a day job at The Boeing Company, working in their Everett location as a Strategic Business Partner on the Learning, Training, and Development team. In this role, Lisa supports the Engineering group within the Boeing Commercial Airplanes division, working with the engineering leadership to help them determine what the learning needs are for their engineers. When the needs are identified, they are passed on to other members of the team for actual curriculum path and course development as well as training delivery. Lisa loves working on long-range business planning, strategic planning, and forecasting – a departure from how she spent the earlier years of her career (building out and facilitating leadership development programs). Lisa commutes to Everett from downtown Redmond where she lives with her husband Chris and their two cats, Gracie and Fletcher.
Lisa has loved her experiences with ASTD and encourages everyone to become an active member, no matter what role you choose to play. She credits her involvement with ASTD for providing not only amazing professional opportunities but also deep friendships. The ASTDps Newsletter Producer/Editor is responsible for collecting newsletter articles and inserting these articles into an existing HTML-email newsletter format and email service provider. Estimated hours are 5-7 per month.

Program Committee Member
Interested in connecting with fantastic workplace development professionals in our region? Join the ASTD Puget Sound Chapter program committee! The program committee is responsible for organizing monthly chapter meetings. The third Tuesday of each month, we provide networking and engaging learning opportunities for ASTDps members. Committee members must be an ASTDps member.
Tasks include: Work with other committee members to recruit and communicate with potential speakers; review and give feedback on proposals; prepare speakers for presentation; event planning.
Time commitment 6-8 hours/month: 3-5 hours each month in preparation (including committee meetings) plus 3 hours each month for chapter meeting program for 1-2 years

VP of Programs
Gain valuable experience on an active volunteer board while putting your event planning experience to use! Join the ASTD Puget Sound Chapter board as VP of Programs. The VP of Programs manages the volunteer committee responsible for organizing monthly chapter meetings. The VP of Programs must be an ASTDps member as well as a member of ASTD national.
Tasks include: Overseeing a team of volunteers on the program and registration committees, work with committee members to recruit and communicate with potential speakers; review and give feedback on proposals; prepare speakers for presentation; event planning; participating in monthly board meetings; managing program budget.
Time commitment 10-20 hours/month for 2 years
